Steve Goldman's Biography

Born and raised in Denver, Colorado, Stephen M. Goldman began his higher education at Duke University, where he graduated with a A.B. degree in History and entry into the country’s oldest (and perhaps most prestigious) undergraduate honors society, Phi Beta Kappa. He attended the University of Michigan Law School, earning his Juris Doctor cum laude, and serving on the Board of Editors of the University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform.

After clerking for Judge (now U.S. Supreme Court Justice) John Paul Stevens in the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit based in Chicago, Steve completed his post-graduate work at the University of Oxford (Brasenose College) in Great Britain, the oldest university in the English-speaking world, earning his Doctorate of Philosophy in Political Theory. While at Oxford, Steve was a Michigan-Ford Foundation Scholar and tutored students in American, British and Soviet Politics.

Soon after completing his Oxford studies, Steve returned to Denver and entered management as Executive Vice President of a family-owned electrical supply business in Denver, Colorado, with branches in Colorado and Wyoming. He later served as President of this successful business that employed at its maximum, about 200 people. Some years later, Steve had his own management consultancy, assisting small businesses and entrepreneurs in and around Denver.

Steve also managed to devote time to teaching, first as Bigelow Fellow and Instructor at the University of Chicago Law School and later as Adjunct Professor for University of Colorado at Denver School of Business, teaching MBA students and courses on business law. Now, Steve is Distinguished Professor and Faculty at the Columbus School of Law, Catholic University of American in Washington, where he teaches Professional Responsibility and Legal Ethics, Law of Corporations, Law, Business & Ethics, Conflict of Laws and Civil Procedure.

His law career began in earnest when he joined the Pittsburgh office of Kirkpatrick and Lockhart. With his trans-Atlantic education and appeals experience, Steve was soon working in complex cases involving environmental litigation, where he often had the role of leading the discovery against Lloyd’s of London and other London Market Insurance companies. He continued this work later in firms in Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia, eventually joining the D. C. Regional Office of Sands Anderson, Marks & Miller in McLean.

Throughout his legal career, Steve has been frequently immersed in exacting discovery on the behavior of risk management professionals in international corporations. Possessing a lively curiosity and soundly trained in analytical thinking, Steve quickly recognized he was getting unique view of the ethical situations and possible repercussions that could be faced by any business. He began to share these observations in scholarly articles for professional journals. Finally, he put his system of thinking about business ethics into his new book Temptations in the Office: Ethical Choices and Legal Obligations, to be published Spring 2008 by Greenwood Prager.

Steve is already working on a new book idea: a text on civil discovery procedures that may be called Let’s Settle It: Winning Pre-Trial and Negotiation Strategies.

Steve is a member of the Insurance Coverage Subcommittee of the Litigation Section of the ABA and a managing editor of Coverage, the section's journal. He currently lives in Bethesda, Maryland.
